/ About
Senior software engineer at Yelp, building the pages people use to choose where to go.
I'm Elmer, a senior software engineer on Yelp's Business Page Platform team. I lead backend architecture for business pages, the part of Yelp where people decide where to eat, who to call, and what to book.
My work is mostly about the systems underneath: how page data gets assembled and delivered to every app, how teams run experiments on the page safely, and how we keep the data on every page consistent and trustworthy.
/ Selected work
Work at Yelp, mostly the parts you don't see.
- 01
Business page platform
Lead backend architecture for Yelp's business page platform, which aggregates page data and serves it to iOS, Android, and web.
- 02
Page layout engine
Server-driven layout engine for the business page. The backend dynamically orders screen components and controls the client UI, and experiments compose instead of needing every combination defined.
- 03
Business page data standards
Defined data standards for each type of business page, with automated checks to enforce them.
- 04
Concurrent data loading platform
Multithreaded data loading layer that fetches a page's data in parallel instead of sequentially. Powers the business page's presentation layer, including features like the sticky call to action.
- 05
Engineering knowledge base
Internal knowledge base that gives engineers and AI tools shared context on how business pages work.
- 06
Server-driven UI across Yelp
Introduced server-driven UI to multiple Yelp screens, including search, across Yelp's SDUI frameworks.
/ Investing
Outside of work, I invest in rare collectibles.
Rare Pokémon games, trading cards, comic books and manga, and NFTs, treated as alternative assets. The edge is knowing what's actually scarce, what condition means, and what's real.
